Cheltenham Beach
A sheltered golden-sand beach on the north side of the Devonport Peninsula, about 15 minutes' walk from the ferry terminal. Dogs enjoy seasonal off-leash access on the sand with stunning views across the Hauraki Gulf to Rangitoto Island. Accessible as a car-free outing from central Auckland via the Devonport ferry — pair with a walk through the village.

What a gem. We took the Devonport ferry over and walked straight to Cheltenham — the beach was almost empty mid-week and our spaniel absolutely loved it. Rangitoto views are incredible.
Best beach outing for dogs in Auckland that doesn't involve a long drive. Ferry over, walk through Devonport village, hit the beach. Clean, calm and our dog zapped herself thoroughly.
Stunning location and very dog-friendly. Note that there are seasonal restrictions in summer — check the Auckland Council rules before heading over. Still one of my favourite Auckland spots.
