Kauri Glen Reserve
A bush-covered reserve in Northcote on Auckland's North Shore, home to ancient kauri and tānekaha trees between 200 and 400 years old, and a spectacular 60-metre treetop boardwalk sitting 18 metres above the forest floor. Dogs are welcome on-leash along the main tracks and off-leash in all other areas of the reserve. Boot cleaning stations at every entrance help protect the kauri from dieback disease. Free entry with limited street parking; wheelchair accessible at the upper end from Kauri Glen Road.

One of the most relaxing walks I've done with my child recently. The trail is shaded almost the entire way, with beautifully varied and interesting plants to look at. The distance is just right too, and you can choose a shorter or longer route depending on energy levels.
I'm visiting from Wellington and found Kauri Glen by chance—it's a magical pocket of bush. I walked it at dusk and the birdsong was unbelievable.
The tree canopy section feels like you're walking through a rainforest cathedral. I saw a kōtare perched on a branch just metres away. Go early on a weekday to avoid dog-walking rush hour, and take a moment to sit on the log bench mid-loop and just listen.
